Whether it’s riding the range, subduing stampeding cattle or coping with rattlesnakes and bureaucrats, ranching the Rosasco way has been successful for over a hundred and forty years. Although patriarch Antonio Rosasco remained in Italy, his adventuresome son Augustino and grandson, the colorful Guiseppe, headed for California’s fabled Gold Country in the 1860’s, not to mine but to raise cattle.

Otis Rosasco

The ranch Guiseppe established in western Tuolumne County formed the beginning of the Rosasco Ranches, now a thriving beef cattle operation spread over three counties. Giuseppe’s grandson Otis Rosasco’s engaging memoir combines family history with ranch life as he, his ancestors and neighbors have lived it. Four generations of Rosascos have followed in the footsteps of the unforgettable Giuseppe and they are as much a part of the landscape as the historic Stone Corral and towering Table Mountain at Turner Flat.

The author’s remarkable memory for names and places is demonstrated repeatedly as he traces his personal journey and his family’s story through the years. Generation after generation Rosasco family members have exemplified the spirit that won the west.
