Stone Fences & Corrals
in the South Central
Sierra Nevada Foothills
A Living History Exhibit
As many of us drive on scenic
Hwy 120/108 through Oakdale traveling towards Tuolumne,
Calaveras and Mariposa counties, we see the beautiful
historic rock fences and corrals that grace the foothills.

Who built these? Why were they built? And
how did they find all those rocks?
You’ll find the answers to these questions in the research
documentation and gorgeous photographs that encompass the beauty
and uniqueness of this living history exhibit.
A special thanks to exhibit curators, Twainhart Hill and Sharon
Getchel, who spent the past twelve months and countless hours
interviewing the many ranching families in four counties and
learned the stories that have been passed down generations from
the early settlers.
The Oakdale Cowboy Museum’s recent exhibit
of the Stone Fences & Rock Corrals of the Southern Sierra
Foothills, opened on October 20, 2007 and ran successfully through
May 31, 2008. In September of 2008 through May of 2009, this
exhibit was on display at the Tuolumne County Historical Society
Museum in Sonora.
